How to install StaffToDo

StaffToDo is on Google Play for Android, and it installs straight from the browser on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows. It also works as an ordinary website, so nobody is forced to install anything to get started.

The options

Five ways to open it, all the same account

StaffToDo is a progressive web app. That is the plain reason a phone or a computer can turn it into a real app without an app store in the middle. Whichever route you take below, staff sign in to the same workspace and see the same tasks.

Android, from Google Play
The StaffToDo app is on the Play Store. This is the normal route on an Android phone or tablet.
Android, from the browser
Chrome can put StaffToDo on the home screen without the Play Store. Useful on a phone with no Play services.
iPhone and iPad
There is no App Store app yet. Safari adds StaffToDo to the home screen, and it opens full screen like any other app.
Mac and Windows
Chrome and Edge can install StaffToDo as a desktop app, so it lives in the Dock or the taskbar and opens in its own window.
Nothing at all
You can skip installing. portal.stafftodo.com works in any modern browser, and that is the same workspace as the app.

Android

On an Android phone or tablet

Most people should use the Play Store. The browser route exists for phones without Google Play services, and it gives you the same thing.

iPhone and iPad

On an iPhone or iPad

There is no App Store app yet and one is being worked on. Safari can still put StaffToDo on the home screen, and once it is there most staff cannot tell the difference. This has to be done in Safari. Chrome on an iPhone does not offer it.

From Safari

  1. 1.Open portal.stafftodo.com in Safari. This has to be Safari, not Chrome.
  2. 2.Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen, the square with an arrow coming out of it.
  3. 3.Scroll down the list and tap Add to Home Screen.
  4. 4.Tap Add. StaffToDo now has its own icon and opens without the browser bars.

Mac and Windows

On a Mac or a Windows computer

Owners and admins usually work at a desk, so this is the one worth doing. Chrome and Edge both support it. Safari on a Mac does not, so install from Chrome or Edge if you want the separate window.

From Chrome or Edge

  1. 1.Open portal.stafftodo.com in Chrome or Edge on the computer.
  2. 2.Look at the right hand end of the address bar for the install icon, a small screen with an arrow pointing into it.
  3. 3.Click it and choose Install. If you cannot see the icon, open the browser menu and look for the install option.
  4. 4.StaffToDo opens in its own window, with its own icon in the Dock on a Mac or the taskbar on Windows.

After it is installed

What installing actually changes

Installing does not unlock features. It changes how StaffToDo is opened and how it sits on the device, which matters more than it sounds when the people using it are on their feet all day.

Its own icon
StaffToDo sits on the home screen or in the taskbar next to everything else, so staff do not have to remember a web address.
Its own window
No address bar and no tabs. It looks and behaves like an app because it opens full screen.
The same workspace
Installed or not, it is the same account and the same tasks. Nothing is stored in one place and missing in the other.
Nothing to maintain
Updates arrive when you open it. Nobody has to push a new version out to staff phones.

Questions

Asked and answered

How do I install StaffToDo?
On Android, install the StaffToDo app from Google Play. On iPhone and iPad, open the app in Safari and use Share, then Add to Home Screen. On a Mac or Windows computer, open it in Chrome or Edge and click the install icon at the end of the address bar. You can also just use it in a browser without installing anything.
Is there a StaffToDo app for iPhone?
There is no App Store app yet, and one is on the way. Until then, iPhone and iPad staff add StaffToDo to the home screen from Safari. It gets its own icon, opens full screen with no browser bars, and uses the same account as everyone else.
Can I install StaffToDo on a Windows or Mac computer?
Yes. StaffToDo is a progressive web app, so Chrome and Edge can install it as a desktop app. It gets an icon in the Dock or the taskbar and opens in its own window instead of a browser tab. Safari on a Mac does not offer this, so use Chrome or Edge to install.
Do staff have to install anything to use StaffToDo?
No. StaffToDo runs in a web browser, so a member of staff can sign in on any phone or computer and start working. Installing only changes how it is opened, not what it can do.
Does the installed app hold my tasks if I lose signal?
StaffToDo needs a connection to load and save work, installed or not. Installing gives you the icon and the full screen window, not an offline copy of your task list.
Is StaffToDo free to install?
Installing costs nothing on every platform, including Google Play. The subscription is charged per workspace rather than per person, so adding more staff phones never changes the bill.
